Arikomban’s mother, her leg wounded, found solace in the care of compassionate tribals and forest watchers. For three months, they nurtured her, but destiny had other designs. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries, leaving Arikomban stranded, forever separated from his herd. His path was now destined to unfold in solitude, confined within the boundaries of Chinnakkanal.
Those were simpler times, when the area boasted only a handful of humble houses. Arikomban, then known as ‘Kallakomban’ – the mischievous tusker who steals, would venture into these abodes, causing minimal damage as he savored crops and feasted on succulent plantains. The houses, crafted from bamboo and grass, posed little resistance to his trunk’s explorations.

But as the years unfolded, progress swept through the land. A K Antony’s visionary leadership led to the establishment of the 301 Colony, a sanctuary for landless tribals near the majestic Anayirankal dam. With huts giving way to sturdy concrete houses, Arikomban faced a conundrum. He had to adapt, but in doing so, he resorted to desperate measures to satiate his hunger.
The ration shop in Panniyar tea estate and the house of Vijayan in Periyakanal fell victim to his relentless pursuit for sustenance. Five targeted attacks in just three months sent shockwaves through the community, heightening the human-animal conflict. Lives were lost, and fear gripped the hearts of the people in Santhanpara and Chinnakkanal.
While Arikomban may be considered a junior among the notorious troublemakers, his aggression and remarkable ability to overcome obstacles and trenches set him apart. However, hidden within his belligerence lies a tender memory, a pilgrimage to the Kongini City area, where his mother’s final resting place lies.
